The case of Brandon Bernard
In 1999, Bernard, then 18, and other teenage accomplices robbed and abducted two people. One of the people Bernard, who is now 40, was with shot and killed the victims, and Bernard set fire to the car that carried their bodies. The fire was initially blamed for one of the deaths, but a medical examiner determined that both victims were dead before the fire. That development, along with Bernard’s age at the time of the crime, has pushed advocates to fight for his right to live.
