Probably the most famous hotel in Mallorca, the “Formentor”, has a new owner. It was sold to the Andorra Emin Capital fund for 165 million euros, announced the previous owner, the Barcelo Group.
The luxury hotel is to be operated by the Four Seasons hotel chain after an extensive two-year renovation. In addition to the 1,200 hectare property including the hotel, a wine-growing and hunting area is also included in the price.
The hotel, built in the north of the island in 1929, has already accommodated numerous celebrities. Winston Churchill was there as well as Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, John Wayne and the Dalai Lama. The former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres met there in 2001 with the then PLO head Yasser Arafat for Middle East peace talks.
Hotel by poets for poets
The Barcelo Group took over the hotel that the Argentine poet Adan Diehl had built in 2006. Diehl had wanted to turn the “Formentor” into a meeting place for writers, but soon went bankrupt and returned to his South American homeland in 1934, impoverished. The hotel went to the bank.
In recent years, the hotel has returned a little to its beginnings with cultural events such as the Formentor Sunset Classics festival and the Premio Formentor literary prize.
