The now 18-year-old R. had never denied the fatal shots with an assault rifle at the protest in the US state of Wisconsin, but invoked his right to self-defense. The security measures in the court and in front of the building had previously been tightened significantly due to feared protests. The trial of R. sparked a debate in the United States about the right to self-defense and the right to carry a weapon.

US President Joe Biden stated, “Although the Kenosha ruling will leave many Americans with a feeling of anger and concern, and I am one of them, we must acknowledge that the jury has spoken.” Biden urged citizens to express their reactions to the judgment peacefully and in accordance with the law. “Violence and property destruction have no place in our democracy,” he said. Serious protests broke out in Kenosha in the summer of 2020 after the African-American Jacob Blake was shot several times in the back during a police operation. The then 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse shot two white men with an AR-15 assault rifle and injured another person during a protest.
