Pakistan has opened the nation’s first state-funded school for transgender women, who are often pushed out of the regular education system in the strictly conservative country.
Pakistan- Punjab Provincial Education Minister Murad Raas promised “Education for All” when he opened the school in Multan City this week. There are teachers at the school who are transgender themselves.
In Pakistan, people whose self-perceived gender does not match the biological gender characteristics are included in the Khawaja Sira community. This community is hundreds of years old.
Members of this community are often rejected by their families and ostracized by society. They make a living by dancing, begging, or doing sex work.
