Putin Receives Lukashenko

Russian President Vladimir Putin will receive Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko in St. Petersburg tomorrow.

Lukashenko had sought rapprochement with Putin since his controversial re-election in summer 2020, the crackdown on mass protests in his country and the subsequent EU sanctions policy.
Brussels accuses Lukashenko of smuggling refugees from the Middle East into the EU across the borders of Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. Lukashenko is suspected of wanting revenge for the sanctions in the EU.
Putin and Lukashenko meet in the Russian port city for a private conversation, one day after an informal summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The support of Russia is of vital importance to the Belarusian rulers.Putin Receives Lukashenko In St. Petersburg.
