The meeting of the crisis in Poland after the death of two people as a result of Russian missiles hit Poland the territory of the NATO member.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has convened a meeting of his country’s Security Council because of an unspecified crisis situation. This was reported by the PAP news agency in Warsaw today.
Official details of the crisis have not yet been released, but reports have suggested a link to today’s heavy Russian rocket fire on neighboring Ukraine. The Kremlin denied the attacks.
Report: Two dead in rocket hit
Private Polish radio station ZET reported that two stray rockets had landed in a Polish village near the border. According to unconfirmed information, two people were killed.
It would be the first such incident in Russia’s nearly nine-month war of aggression against Ukraine. Poland is a member of the EU and the western defense alliance NATO.
US investigates missile hit reports
However, government spokesman Piotr Müller warned against spreading untested information. All information from the Polish government’s Committee on Security and Defense should also be made available to the public later, he announced, according to the PAP.
A spokesman for the US Department of Defense in Washington said there was currently no information to confirm Polish media reports of an alleged Russian missile strike. The reports would be checked.
Russia: “Provocation”
The Ministry of Defense in Moscow, however, described Polish information about a Russian missile impact on Polish territory as a deliberate provocation. The Interfax news agency quoted the ministry as saying that these had the aim of escalating the situation. There were no attacks with Russian weapons on targets near the Polish-Hungarian border.
