A diptych copy of Banksy’s famous work “The Girl with the Balloon” was sold yesterday (Friday) for 3.1 million pounds ($4.25 million) during an auction held by Christie’s in London, the day after setting a new record for the British artist, according to the agency.
London – This duplex board, created by Banksy in 2005, shows a young girl holding a red heart-shaped balloon on a white background. Its estimated value ranged from 2.5 million pounds to 3.5 million dollars ($3.4 million and 4.7 million).
This comes the day after another copy of the painting that caused a global uproar after it was torn apart at auction three years ago, achieved a record price of nearly 18.6 million pounds.
Its price far exceeded the previous record for Banksy‘s work, a painting entitled “Game Changer” (Changing the Equation) honoring members of the medical staff, which was sold last March for 16.75 million pounds ($ 23 million) and the proceeds went to the British Health Authority .
The art world was shaken by what happened to the painting in its last appearance in October 2018.
Immediately after the auction ended, and to the astonishment of the audience, the drawing of a little girl holding a red balloon in the shape of a heart fell to the bottom of the painting and began to be smashed automatically by a crushing machine that Banksy had hidden.
This step resulted in roughly half of the plate being chipped.
Through this self-destruction, Banksy wanted to express his refusal to “commodify” art. But since then, his works have made competition in auctions heated, and his works are sold at record prices.
