The American reggae band Artikal Sound System is suing Dua Lipa and its American label Warner for copyright infringement.

The 26-year-old Grammy winner copied Artikal Sound-System’s 2017 song “Live Your Life” for her hit “Levitating,” according to TMZ. A corresponding lawsuit has already been filed with the federal court in Los Angeles.

In addition to damages, the Florida band is also demanding a share of Dua Lipa’s earnings from the hit. “Levitating” peaked at number one on Billboard’s 2021 Hot 100 Songs chart, according to Billboard, and stayed there for 68 weeks. Lipa also broke Forbes magazine’s record for the longest-staying top-ten song by a US artist with “Levitating.”

The hit has been successfully re-recorded twice, once with Madonna and Missy Elliot, another time with DaBaby. However, after the rapper’s homophobic and misogynist statements, the singer distanced herself from her colleague.
“Levitating” is part of the British singer-songwriter’s second studio album. Lipa is currently in the middle of her Future Nostalgia tour, which kicked off in Miami on February 9th. On May 23rd, Lipa will also be performing in the Wiener Stadthall.
